Russia appears to be circumventing sanctions to take control of Ukraine's Starlink system to orchestrate drone strikes. Soldiers and experts have proposed that there could be an increased density of Starlink terminals in disputed zones compared to earlier times, which might potentially affect the speed of connectivity.
Following the 2022 assault, Ukraine's military has greatly benefited from the Starlink internet service. It facilitated instantaneous drone feed sharing among units and ensured communication in regions where conventional mobile services were hampered due to warfare.
Service providers in the Zaporizhzhia region have noted service disruptions in recent weeks. Misha, a telecom operator, pointed out recurring issues like frequent service cuts and slower speeds, which have hindered their work. Another drone operator, known as Anton from the 65th Mechanised Brigade, has observed a substantial drop in speed since the start of the year, which he believes is due to the rising demand for Starlink terminals within local units.
Numerous Ukrainian groups along the battle lines have confirmed the issues of slow speed with Starlink and observed heightened usage by Russians. Nonetheless, they have opted to stay unidentified due to the delicate nature of the matter.
Ukraine has taken steps to address the use of Starlink by Russia in areas under occupation, suggesting new legal terms for satellite communications. The goal is to establish a list of approved devices that Kyiv can use. Behind the scenes, talks with SpaceX and US authorities are being described as sensitive, due to worries about guaranteeing Ukrainian forces' access and preventing Russia from misusing the service.
Contrary to Elon Musk's earlier claims that Starlink wouldn't operate in Russia, recent conversations on social media indicate a different scenario. Russian crowdfunding groups are openly talking about buying and setting up Starlink terminals in Ukrainian regions controlled by Russia.
These advancements have prompted Democrats on the US Congressional Oversight Committee to urgently request a briefing from Starlink about the usage of the devices by Russia, voicing concerns about possible breaches of US sanctions.
