During the Conflict Between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Erdogan to Visit US on May 9, his Initial Visit During Biden's Presidency
On May 9, President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is scheduled to make a trip to the United States. It was also reported by Turkish press that Erdogan plans to repeat his call for Israel to halt its aggression in Gaza and implement a two-state resolution to the issue.
For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9, as announced by a Turkish security official on Friday.
Reuters reports that the head of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is set to meet with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. They plan to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other mutual matters, added the official.
Previously, it was extensively covered in Turkish news that Erdogan was set to visit the US, courtesy of an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders occurred in July at a NATO Summit, although they have regularly communicated over the phone.
Interestingly, while the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's NATO application, which was initially opposed by Istanbul, things have since returned to normal after Turkey gave their approval. Furthermore, the meeting becomes particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential for the conflict to escalate across all of Western Asia.
Reports from Turkish press had also indicated that Erdogan would once again call for Israel to cease their assaults in Gaza and propose a two-state resolution to the issue.
Erdogan has consistently criticized the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader accused the US of being the cause of the so far unsuccessful peace efforts in the region, following the war that erupted after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.
One significant topic likely to capture the focus of the two leaders could be Turkey's purchase of F-16s and the process of modernizing and updating the jets they've obtained until now.
