During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit under the Biden administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan is expected to repeat his call for Israel to halt attacks in Gaza and advocate for the two-state solution to the issue.
For the first time near the end of Biden's term, the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, is set to visit the United States on May 9th, as revealed by a Turkish security representative on Friday.
As per Reuters, the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. They plan to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters affecting both nations, an official stated.
Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was set to visit the US, following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face interaction between the two leaders occurred in July at a NATO Summit, despite their regular phone communications.
By chance, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially hindered by Istanbul. However, the frosty relations thawed back to normal once Turkey gave its approval. Moreover, this meeting is particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for the conflict to escalate throughout the whole of Western Asia.
Reports from Turkish news outlets indicated that Erdogan intended to repeat his call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.
Erdogan has expressed criticism towards the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of the peace process in the region, initiated after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.
A significant matter anticipated to capture the focus of the two leaders could be Turkey's purchase of F-16s and the process of updating and modernizing the jets they have obtained to date.
