Erdogan’s First Visit to US Under Biden Administration: Expectations, Context, and Implications Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

During the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9 for the first time during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan will use this visit to repeat his call for Israel to cease its attacks in Gaza and endorse a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's tenure, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9th, as confirmed by a Turkish security official on Friday.

As per Reuters, the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is set to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. They will talk about the upcoming visit of Erdogan and other matters concerning both countries, added the official.

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan had plans to visit the US, following an invitation from President Joe Biden. Their most recent face-to-face meeting took place last July at a NATO Summit, but they have regularly communicated by phone.

Interestingly, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was originally opposed by Turkey. However, relations thawed and returned to a stable state after Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, the meeting is particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential for the conflict to escalate throughout the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish media had also suggested that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and advocate for the two-state resolution to the issue.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has chastised the US for its firm backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the Turkish leader criticized the US, blaming it for the unsuccessful peace attempts in the area since the outbreak of war following Hamas' assault on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

Another main topic that is anticipated to take center stage for the two leaders would likely be the purchase of F-16s by Turkey and the process of upgrading and modernizing jets that have been bought thus far.
