During the Israel-Hamas Conflict, Turkish President Erdogan will be in the US on May 9, marking his initial visit during Biden's presidency

President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is set to tour the United States on May 9. It was also reported by Turkish news outlets that Erdogan is expected to reassert his call for Israel to cease its offensives in Gaza and advocate for the two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time, towards the end of Biden's administration, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the U.S. on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who reported this on Friday.

Reuters reports that the head of the Turkish intelligence agency MIT, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to meet with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. The meeting is set to focus on Erdogan's upcoming visit and other mutual concerns, the official stated.

Previously, various sources from the Turkish press had extensively covered that Erdogan was supposed to visit the US following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders took place last July during a NATO Summit, despite them regularly communicating via phone calls.

By chance, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially opposed by Istanbul. However, the tension eased after Turkey gave its approval. Furthermore, the meeting becomes even more important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential for this conflict to spread throughout Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish outlets also indicated that Erdogan was expected to repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza, and to advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed strong criticism towards the US for its unflinching backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year, in February, the Turkish leader pointed an accusing finger at the US, blaming it for the so far unsuccessful peace negotiations in the area since the conflict ignited following Hamas' assault on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

The sale of F-16s to Turkey and the process of upgrading and modernizing the jets that have been purchased so far is anticipated to be a major topic of discussion for the two leaders.
