During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Erdogan plans US visit on May 9, marking his first under the Biden administration

President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is set to make a trip to the United States on May 9. Reports from Turkish media indicate that Erdogan plans to once again call for Israel to halt aggression in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

As the Biden administration comes to an end, a Turkish security official announced on Friday that President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey will make his first visit to the United States on May 9th.

Reuters reports that the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is set to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. The meeting is to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters concerning both countries, as stated by an official.

Previously, numerous Turkish news sources had broadly covered that Erdogan was set to visit the US, following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders occurred last July during a NATO Summit, despite their regular phone conversations.

Coincidentally, US-Turkey relations had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially opposed by Istanbul. However, these cool relations resumed their normal state after Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, this meeting becomes particularly important considering the recent Israel-Hamas war and the potential for this conflict to escalate across all of West Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also suggested that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has criticized the United States for its unwavering support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year, in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace negotiations in the region, following the war that erupted after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

Another significant matter anticipated to seize the focus of the two leaders would be the transaction of F-16s to Turkey and the improvement and modernization process for jets that have been purchased till now.
