Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden’s US: Highlighting Turkey’s Role Amid Israel-Hamas War and Bilateral Relations

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. According to Turkish news outlets, Erdogan is expected to once again call for an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's tenure, President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who announced this on Friday.

Reuters reports that the leader of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. They plan to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters concerning both countries, according to an official.

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was due to visit the US, following an invite from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders took place last July during a NATO Summit, but they have maintained regular phone conversations.

Interestingly, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially obstructed by Turkey. However, the relations have been normalised following Turkey's approval of the matter. Additionally, the meeting becomes crucial considering the war between Israel and Hamas and the potential escalation of the conflict throughout Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish press also suggested that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and promote the idea of a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has, nonetheless, expressed disapproval of the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year, in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the lack of progress in the peace discussions in the region since the war initiated due to Hamas' assault on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

Another crucial topic that is likely to dominate the discussions between the two leaders would be the purchase of F-16s by Turkey and the process of updating and modernizing the jets they've obtained thus far.
