Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden Administration: Turkish President’s Stand on Israel-Hamas War and Implications for US-Turkey Relations

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to be in the U.S. on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. It has been reported by Turkish news outlets that Erdogan plans to restate his call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and to endorse a two-state resolution to the conflict.

For the first time towards the end of Biden's term, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who disclosed this information on Friday.

Reuters reports that the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. They will be discussing Erdogan's upcoming visit and other issues concerning both countries, as stated by an official.

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was set to visit the US at the request of President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between these two leaders took place last July during a NATO Summit, but they have maintained regular phone communication.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey had faced tension due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially halted by Istanbul. However, after Turkey agreed to the issue, the relations have since warmed back up. Additionally, the gathering gains importance against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for the conflict to expand throughout the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish press also indicated that Erdogan was expected to repeat his call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and support a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed his criticism of the US for its persistent backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the president of Turkey blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace efforts in the region, since the war erupted following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 of the previous year.

Another significant matter likely to command the focus of the two leaders could be the selling of F-16s to Turkey and a process of modernization and upgrade for the jets obtained to this point.
