Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden Administration Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: An Overview of Anticipated Discussions and Broader Implications

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan is expected to repeat his call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to travel to the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who disclosed this information on Friday.

Reuters reported that the head of Turkish intelligence agency MIT, Ibrahim Kalin, is set to hold talks with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. They plan to discuss President Erdogan's upcoming visit along with other matters pertaining to both nations, as stated by an official.

Previously, it was extensively covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was set to visit the US, following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face interaction between the two leaders took place last July at a NATO Summit, but they have maintained regular phone communication.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been tense due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially hindered by Istanbul. However, the chilly relations thawed once Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, the gathering takes on added importance considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for the conflict to escalate across all of West Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also indicated that Erdogan was expected to repeat his call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed disapproval of the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace negotiations in the region, which has been in turmoil since the war sparked off when Hamas assaulted Israel on October 7 the previous year.

Another crucial matter likely to dominate the discussions between the two leaders could be the selling of F-16s to Turkey and a process to update and modernize the jets that have been obtained so far.
