Erdogan’s First US Visit under Biden Administration: Strategic Dialogues Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict and Turkey-US Relations

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the U.S. on May 9, marking his first visit during the Biden administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan will use this opportunity to repeat his call for Israel to cease its attacks in Gaza and advocate for the two-state solution to resolve the conflict.

For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will be visiting the United States on May 9, as announced by a Turkish security official on Friday.

Reuters reports that the head of Turkish MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. The main agenda for this meeting is to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters concerning both nations, as per an official.

Previously, it was extensively covered by the Turkish press that Erdogan had planned to visit the US at the request of President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between the two leaders took place last July at a NATO Summit, despite their ongoing communication via phone calls.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey, which had been strained due to Sweden's desire to join NATO – a move initially hindered by Istanbul, had returned to a normal state after Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, the meeting gains importance due to the recent Israel-Hamas conflict and the potential for the dispute to escalate across all of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also mentioned that Erdogan was expected to repeat his call for Israel to halt its aggression in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed disapproval of the US for its consistent backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace efforts in the region since the war began, following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 of the previous year.

Another significant topic that is anticipated to dominate the discussions between the two leaders would be Turkey's purchase of F-16s and the process of updating and modernizing the jets they've obtained to date.
