Elon Musk Challenges AI Industry Norms: Plans to Open-Source xAI’s Grok AI Amidst Lawsuit Against OpenAI

4 min read

Elon Musk, the billionaire tech tycoon, has revealed plans to make a large part of GrokAI's source code publicly available this week. This move will put Grok among many other AI developers who have also made their source codes open-source. Musk has also thrown down the gauntlet to OpenAI, challenging them to do the same with ChatGPT.

In an unexpected development that has left even his detractors astonished, Elon Musk has declared that his AI venture, xAI, will make Grok AI, its chatbot rivaling ChatGPT, open-source by the end of this week. Essentially, this indicates that he will make the source code, or a substantial part of it, accessible for everyone to view, and potentially utilize in their own chatbots.

This action occurs only weeks following Musk's legal action against OpenAI, claiming that the startup, supported by Microsoft, has deviated from its initial open-source values and is now solely concentrating on making money.

Grok was first launched by xAI the previous year, providing options like real-time data access. This service can be availed by those who subscribe to X's premium plan, which costs $16 per month.

This week, Grok will be made open source by @xAI, as announced by Elon Musk (@elonmusk) on March 11, 2024.

This week, Grok will be released as open source by @xAI.

Musk was among the initial supporters of OpenAI. Almost ten years ago, he financed Sam Altman's venture with the aspiration that OpenAI would persist in challenging the dominance that Google had established.

Musk asserts that OpenAI has deviated from its pledge to openly distribute its technology to the public, instead opting for a closed-source approach and primarily aiming to boost Microsoft's profits.

The legal battle has ignited discussions among tech experts and financiers regarding the worth of open-source AI. Vinod Khosla, a pioneer supporter of OpenAI, has voiced his disapproval of Musk's lawsuit, calling it a "huge diversion" from the objective of attaining Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and reaping its advantages.

As a reaction, Marc Andreessen, who co-founded Andreessen Horowitz, blamed Khosla for opposing open-source AI research.

Andreessen contended that every major technological breakthrough is accompanied by overblown apprehensions and asserted that open-source AI is crucial for development. His company, a16z, has backed Mistral, an open-source chatbot.

The news that xAI is planning to make Grok open-source soon puts it among an increasing number of firms, such as Meta and French newcomer Mistral, which have shared their chatbot codes with the public. Additionally, Grok is joining a series of ventures by Elon Musk that have been converted to open-source.

Elon Musk has consistently advocated for open-source projects. Many patents at Tesla have been opened to the public. Furthermore, X has also made strides to make some of its algorithms publicly accessible last year.
