Tech Unemployment 2024: Dell dismisses 6000 staff, totaling to 13000 layoffs in a year

Dell has declared another wave of job cuts, terminating more than 6000 workers. Throughout this financial year, Dell's total layoffs have reached 13000, exceeding their initial expectations.

Dell Technologies publicized another wave of job cuts earlier this week, leading to about 6,000 workers losing their jobs. This step further increases the major downsizing by the tech behemoth, which saw around 13,000 jobs lost in the previous financial year, exceeding the original forecasted figures.

Dell's job cuts are a component of a larger plan to reduce expenses, incorporating actions like restraining outside recruitment and carrying out staff reshuffles and team overhauls. This move is a reaction to a time of slow interest in personal computers, resulting in an 11 percent revenue decrease in the last quarter of the past year.

As of February 2, Dell announced a global workforce of 120,000, indicating a decrease of almost 10% from the prior year. The firm stressed its continuous initiatives to cut down expenses while prioritizing the enhancement of its employees' skills and the recruitment, development and retention of high-quality personnel.

Dell's management declared employment reductions in early 2023 due to poor personal computer sales, initially aiming for about 6,650 positions. However, the total job losses in the financial year of 2024 were almost double.

Even with the hurdles, Dell predicts an increase in net income for its Client Solutions Group this year, although it expects an increase in production costs and a continuous decrease in net income from its other business divisions because of alterations in its partnership with VMware.

Dell is now discontinuing its work-from-home setup and is introducing a new office return policy. This categorizes employees as either 'hybrid' or 'remote'. The objective of this move is to prevent remote staff from being qualified for promotions or role transitions within Dell.

Dell, once recognized for its blend of in-office and remote work, has recently altered its policies impacting those who work from home. A new study disclosed that those remote employees looking for advancement are now required to adopt a mixed work approach, involving a minimum of three days of office work per week. This change has led to worries among staff about potential hindrances to their career progression and a decrease in work flexibility.

On the other hand, a research mentioned by Bloomberg underscores the potential for revenue expansion for businesses that provide flexible remote work arrangements. Businesses that have completely flexible work-from-home policies saw a 21 per cent boost in sales from 2020 to 2022, in contrast to a mere 5 per cent rise in revenue for businesses with either hybrid or completely onsite work configurations during the same time frame.
