In retaliation to US tech restrictions, China prohibits the usage of Intel and AMD CPUs, GPUs in government PCs
As a countermeasure against escalating sanctions on technological goods from the US and its allies, China has introduced new rules essentially prohibiting the use of Intel and AMD products in computers on government-run networks and systems.
China has introduced measures designed to gradually eliminate U.S. microprocessors from government PCs and servers, according to a Financial Times report on Sunday. The plan also seeks to replace Microsoft’s Windows operating system and foreign-made database software with local options.
The report indicates that government bodies higher than the township level have been directed to give preference to "safe and reliable" processors and operating systems when making purchases.
In late December, China's industrial department released a declaration detailing CPUs, operating systems, and central databases that are considered "safe and reliable" for a span of three years, all procured from Chinese firms, as verified by Reuters.
The Information Office of the State Council, which handles media inquiries for China's cabinet, did not promptly reply to solicitation for remarks. Similarly, Intel and AMD did not immediately answer Reuters' calls for comments.
The decision has been made in the context of the US's attempts to enhance local semiconductor manufacturing and lessen dependence on China and Taiwan. This is part of the Biden administration's 2022 CHIPS and Science Act strategy. The goal of the act is to strengthen the US semiconductor industry by providing financial support for local manufacturing, including subsidies for the production of advanced chips.
