Samsung and Rebellions, two South Korean chip producers, aim to outdo NVIDIA

Two of the major South Korean chip manufacturers, Samsung and Rebellions, are preparing to compete with NVIDIA and its H100 AI GPU. Particularly, Rebellions has established itself as South Korea's primary competitor in the AI inference field against NVIDIA.

Rebellions semiconductors, a South Korean start-up, and their AI chips are the newest advancements in neural processing units (NPUs). They are specifically designed for AI models handling up to 7 billion parameters.

Rebellions is targeting to revolutionize the AI chip sector with its innovative technology, as it endures thorough examination against the A100 graphics processing units (GPUs) of industry heavyweight NVIDIA.

Rebellions' innovation centers around the Atom NPU, carefully designed to excel at concurrent matrix operations, giving it a key edge in the field of deep learning AI techniques.

Under the leadership of CEO and co-founder Park Sung-hyun, Rebellions has established itself as South Korea's leading competitor against NVIDIA in the field of AI inference, a vital procedure in real-time data evaluation and forecasting.

During a recent discussion with The Korea Times, Park shared future plans for Atom's large-scale manufacturing using Samsung Electronics' advanced 5-nanometer technology. This marks a significant turning point for South Korea's chip industry. Atom's uniqueness comes from it being the first mass-produced chip designed domestically to support language models, further highlighting Rebellions' expertise in AI innovation.

Park claims that Atom surpasses NVIDIA's GPUs in AI inference, demonstrating up to five times better power efficiency. In a benchmark test for language model inference, it was reported that Atom's latency was just half of that of NVIDIA's A2, highlighting its superior performance. Importantly, Atom's need for cooling is considerably less than that of NVIDIA's chips, leading to lower operation expenses and energy use.

The growing need for AI chips has thrust South Korea into prominence as a crucial contributor to semiconductor advancement. Supported by major companies like Samsung, telecommunications titan KT, and internet juggernaut Kakao, Rebellions managed to raise an impressive USD 124 million in funding, reinforcing its position as the highest-funded chip startup in the nation.

KT is set to be the first client for Rebellions after Atom's mass production, and Park sees telecom firms playing a crucial role in the AI chip landscape, noting the sector's move towards innovation driven by infrastructure. Additionally, Rebellions' partnership with Samsung highlights the country's progress in dominating the semiconductor industry, as seen in the joint development of Rebel – a cutting-edge NPU designed for extensive language models.

Rebellions is focused on growing globally and Park is positive about the company's path, aiming for a substantial portion of the market in inference chips used for extensive language models. As the generative AI market is rising, Rebellions is prepared to establish a specific segment in the highly competitive AI chip market, contesting NVIDIA's supremacy and signaling a fresh wave of creativity in South Korea's semiconductor scene.
