AI could result in the loss of 8 million jobs in the UK, affecting almost 60% of positions if policies aren't revised

Approximately 8 million individuals in the UK may face job loss, and over 60% could experience significant changes in their job roles, if the government run by Rishi Sunak doesn't implement protective measures for human employment.

There could be a serious employment problem looming in the UK as an increasing number of businesses are considering the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has released a grim prediction, suggesting that about 8 million employees in the UK are at risk of unemployment due to AI, if the existing government rules regulating AI and employment remain unchanged.

The IPPR has released a report indicating that AI is currently impacting 11% of the tasks carried out by workers in the UK. This number is expected to skyrocket to almost 60% if businesses further incorporate the technology.

Part-time, beginner-level, and behind-the-scenes jobs like customer service are especially vulnerable, though higher-earning roles will progressively experience this effect as well.

The results from the IPPR highlight the difficulties the government is dealing with as it relies on AI to resolve the UK's issues with productivity.

Companies strive to improve their efficiency by integrating AI. Meanwhile, the UK's Exchequer Chancellor has declared a significant investment of £800 million in technology and AI to boost productivity in the public sector.

Carsten Jung, a leading economist at IPPR, highlighted the revolutionary possibilities of AI, referring to it as a "game changer" for numerous individuals. Nonetheless, Jung cautioned that absent of preventative steps taken by the government, businesses, and labor unions, we could be facing a "jobs catastrophe."

The report from IPPR underscores the importance of government strategy in determining the effect of AI integration on the job market. Through the simulation of different situations, the researchers discovered that the right policies could enable AI to substantially enhance economic progress without leading to unemployment.

On the flip side, if no action is taken, the incorporation of AI could lead to the loss of 8 million jobs in the UK, without any equivalent economic advantages.

A distinct research conducted by LinkedIn showed that the UK is trailing other nations in AI capabilities, emphasizing the critical demand for programs aimed at enhancing skills.

Janine Chamberlin, who heads LinkedIn in the UK, emphasised the significant role of investing in skill enhancement to fill the void between current skills and the ones needed in the era of artificial intelligence.

The IPPR advocates for the creation of an AI-focused strategy for industries to help manage job transitions and guarantee a fair allocation of the advantages of automation throughout the economy. They propose financial incentives, regulation modifications, and backing for environmentally friendly jobs that are less likely to be automated.

As AI transforms the employment scene, it's crucial for both business entities and government bodies to take necessary steps to counter any potential adverse effects and capitalize on the advantages that AI-led innovation can offer.
